What’s the new picture resolution? I’m getting top and bottom white bar. Thank you.
@aaem What exactly do you mean? Can you show an image perchance?
When you click on a thing, then click on an image, there are white bars either top and bottom or left and right depending on the dimensions/resolution of the image.
@aaem How long have you been using Thingiverse
It’s 1024x1024. 1:1 ratio. Thingiverse appears to compress the image and then resize it to a 1:1 ratio.
@aaem It is normal, looks the same on my screen. I will talk to someone if we can do something abut this.
I don’t remember how long. Probably 2 years. Yes, it is normal now. It wasn’t like this before. But at least now I know what size/ratio to upload. Thank you for your help.
The format is 4x3 for thumbnails and miniatures and it switches to 1x1 when you open it “full screen”. I would recommend sticking to 4x3, otherwise the white bands appearon the thumbnails which are already not so big.
@aaem No problem, if you want to talk face to face, don’t be afraid to send me a Zoom link
We’re switching over to a different way of getting resized images. So for now you will still get the white bars in some cases, but that should not stay forever.
@nallath What is the estimated time for that to happen?
There isn’t an estimated time.
@nallath As in… How long before there is no “white bars” when we click on an Thing
Thank you @remi_rafael @nallath
I can’t tell you, as I don’t know. It depends on the priorities that are being set by other people than me ![]()
Also related to the picture resolution situation is that Thingiverse seems to scale down the resolution of the image to make it look blurrier than on other sites, in my experience.
It does, that is also why we want to move over to the new system.
Is this why some images do not show up when you are scrolling through them? Some of the older posts (uploaded 2-3 years ago) now have preview images but when you use the left and right scroll buttons an image just gives the alt text. Then if you do a force reload Shift +F5 sometimes you can get it to load.
I have no idea how many images there are on Thingiverse other than to say a couple of hundred million so I know it takes time for those to get processed.
