Newbie trying to make a fairly basic shape and struggling help haha

hey all trying to create a file to 3d print its a fairly basic shape its an escution plate Rectangle with 4 mounting holes at the corners an offset hole in the centre with some shallow engraved numbers for a rotary switch around 10mm thick 110mm long and 40mm wide ive chat gpt a file and it looks like what i want in cura but is printing out completely different is this normal? ive printed several thingiverse file with no issues this is my 1st self designed file. is there software worth learning as a newbie to help design, i dont intend doing it too often haha any help much appreciated

Fusion is free for hobbyists. It’s a full-blown cad software. Not my first choice, but doable. Depends on how fast you pick things like that up.

You don’t have a depth or diameter on that back-side counterbore that I can see. And is zero thirty degrees above the dimension line for the 8.8mm hole?

Now that I’m really looking at it, there’s a lot of missing information. Size of the dial for the numbers to be arranged around, the distance to the 3.5mm holes. If you made a fully detailed drawing I could probably knock it out in a few minutes.

Onshape is a pretty good one too, and you don’t have to download a software as it’s browser based.

hi brimstone326, thankyou for taking the time to respond your drawing is pretty perfect, the holes arent critical as they are going onto a flat box housing the internal electronics the switch is controlling so roughly inset to the corners is fine, the nut on the back is only around 1mm thick and is an 8mm nut. The 30 degrees is the increment positive stop of the rotary switch ill be using so dont mind if it starts at the “10 oclock position” then 30 degrees onwards for the next numbers if that makes sense, ill go and make a better drawing for a reference.

kind regards

Adam

thanks for the advice its really appreciated ill take a look at this software ill let you know how i get on.

Kind regards

I’ll leave it up for a day or so. It’s a start. You should be able to import it into whatever software you end up using and you can always modify it.

thankyou again brimstone its truly appreciated, i use cura will this software open a .step file?thankyou

Doesn’t appear to. I made the step file thinking you might need to edit it in other software. I can make an stl when I get home.

no problem ive managed to download fusion 360 and convert into an stl file, its printing now and looking good ill zap a picture when its done. cheers again

Glad to hear it. I was going to post it as a thing otherwise.

Hope it works out. You should be able to modify it in Fusion if you need to.
