Files uploaded in in 2023 not always got a thumbnail. Especially larger files were dropped from the queue. I sometimes uploaded again and it worked, sometimes new upload didn’t help. Now the upload process and thumbnail generation works much better.
I don’t want to reupload files from the past. This would destroy statistics and the visible progress.
I see two solutions:
- a button to request regeneration of thumbnails on a thing
- a form to request check/regeneration of thumbnails on a specified thing(-url)
- a process on the server scanning for grey thumbnails (see picture below) and trying to generate new thumbnails. (perfect version, I think)
This process could run in times of low load and would improve the appearance oft the Thingiverse page.
But I should mention an ugly detail: the actual color doesn’t match the old one.
I agree about images and models (stls) not always displaying properly or displaying at all. A few years back images were displayed using the wrong aspect ratios. I believe they adjusted to the available space rather than keeping the proper aspect ratio and just scaling the images.
Rather than putting the onus on the designers to fix a website/server issue, I would think that there should be a background process that would be running (at low usage times and continuously) that would update all images on the site. I have placed quite a few designs on Thingiverse and I don’t really want to spend my time going back through everything to ensure they display properly. I already spent a lot of time trying to get everything correct originally. The background process should be cycling through all image/stl files on the servers. It can be a low priority process as long as it is rechecking all accounts. It might take some time originally, but it would fix the issues and keep them all up to date in case new display methods are employed.
