no matter what u do u get a pop up it was way better befor minneys came with all the adds its not a youtube chanel thats y its getting to the point u cant use the website
Hi Skrimgrim, thanks a lot for the feedback.
Do you mind sharing a screenshot of what it looks like on your screen? We can see if we can mitigate the ads.
On another note, I hate ads as much as you, but it is the reality of the business model of the business that we acquired. We are working on an ad-free premium version of the site, and more going forward, premium features to monetise the platform while still keeping all files free to download and not hiding any content behind a paywall.
yo relly wow so your going to force us to pay for no adds wow what a lie oh we are going to be free for the people that dont have lots of money just wow im going to fb with this like its sad when u lie to a hole group of people just till u got rich now u want more money sad
Chill bro
The people running Thingiverse have to pay both to keep it running (server space and the like) and their employees. You’re getting a great library of stls for free. They can’t run this on a shoestring and a prayer. If you don’t want to see ads then buy a premium subscription. If you’re too cheap to spend a couple bucks a month on that then you can go somewhere else where you will quickly see that everyone either has ads or a paid plan.
Quite the opposite: like we said during our initial AMA in February, we have re-iterated that we will not be putting up a paywall. Everything remains free. If you wish to enjoy browsing Thingiverse and downloading Things for free, you can continue to not pay for anything. The ad-free premium version is only optional.
I think this might just be a lack of understanding how sites work and why there’s ads. It can be cumbersome to navigate all of the popups and ads on many sites, but this is how free things are kept free. They grant ad space to advertisers, the advertisers pay for that ad space, and the company uses that ad-revenue (their only source of revenue currently) to pay for their servers (or electricity to run them if they own the servers outright), pay their employees fair wages (would you work for free?), and any other bills they might incur as a company. If you, the end user, want NO ads, then you will have the option to replace that ad revenue with your own money to remove the ads. Its a simple model, and it works, and it makes sense.
The things is I have 2 other websites that offer free stls but not full of adds to the point its lagging out the website like its sad your standing up for a lier that lied to everyone to get his websites famous
Please tell me what these websites are.
I have found nothing that offers the sheer volume of free stl files that thingiverse has.
printables / thangs / cults3d the last 2 yes they have pay ones but also tons of free trust me i did a bunch of looking and its not thar 1 time messing with the people they are being looked at for addind mailwar to add vids and stealing peoples makes with lisines and selling them look it we its bad idk if they can fix it this time
still a paywall if your offing no adds like sad u dont care to look that up but what do i know i only run my own printing busniss
Hey, I get you are a free site and need to have ads to keep it that way, but the Weiser lock ads are brutal. They take up the whole screen on my iPad and I can’t find a way to close them. They load up randomly when I’m scrolling through search results, not anything I’ve tapped on, and they don’t have a timer or anything. The only way I can make them go away is to repeatedly re-load the screen.
Thanks for sharing this feedback. Could you please share a screenshot when you encounter this again on iPad?
Ads make the world go-round. I have no problem with ads or paying for premium, ad free service. Let’s face it, there’s a lot more to hosting a website then just spitting out some code. There are infrastructure cost, development cost, connectivity cost, storage and backup cost, data center presence cost, legal expenses…etc. Something or someone has to pay for these things and for the user, ads are free but for the operator they are badly needed revenue generators. I do agree that the ads should be family friendly or otherwise non-offensive but the ads must be. That simple.
Here’s a few thoughts, from a web developer…
Most Thingiverse visitors have Full HD or 4K screens, yet, the content for Thingiverse only uses approximately 53% (52.71%) of the screen width and approximately 65% (64.86) of the screen height, on a 4K screen. This leaves nothing but whitespace on the left and right of the content.
- Inscrease the usable width of the actual content to 80% of the screen.
- Get the ads out of the content, THE REASON WHY WE ARE HERE,
- Put the ads on the sides 10% screen width on each side would be more than enough.
- Ditch user tracking ads and gear all ads towards the reason why we are her, 3D printing, STEM/STEAM, maker related content.
- Make us WANT to click on ads, so us things things we would find interesting, related to why we are here, not an ad for a car that places a tracking cookie on our system three weeks ago that we have less than no interest in and will never buy.
- The answer is not “quantity” ads, it’s “QUALITY” ads.
- Don’t even consider a paywall or even a “pay for premium with no ads”. Thingiverse has enough issues and we all have enough subscriptions.
The story is a bit different on Full HD screens. Almost the full width of the screen is utilized, but there is still room for some changes.
- Decrease the width of the ItemCardGrid to 206px, this will allow for 7 cards per row.
- Change the width of the .SearchPage to 1426px, this will limit the item grid to 5 item columns.
- Place ads on the sides.
- Follow points 4-7 above.
Now, I may only have a Bachelor’s degree in web design and development, with hundreds of websites of all kinds created since graduating in 2015, but more importantly, I have common sense. This would be a site that I would continue using, despite its many, many, many other flaws.
However, the solution to this is not to cram more, obnoxious and intrusive ads in our faces. Make the ads integrated, keel them out of the way, but keep them interesting. Use the ads to create and build partnerships to further build the Thingiverse brand.
The alternative will be driving us visitors away in droves.
Like the old saying, “If a tree falls in a forest, and noone is there, does it make a sound?”, likewise, “If a website is filled with obnoxious and intrusive ads, but noone visits, does it generate revenue?”
adds are how they get paid
U can put adds but y set them to everything u do u click one comes up u back space anether comes like thats a big difference they can use all that deaf space for the adds instead of them on the interface
Will you continue to use scripts that trigger misleading error messages if blocking software is installed?
Thanks a lot for taking the time to share your educated thoughts. the Can you please share a screenshot of your screen, just so I picture exactly what you’re talking about?
That shouldn’t be in place today. Have you spotted one?
